About this destination

What makes it worth it

Bantayan Island sits in the Visayan Sea off the northern tip of Cebu. It's small, about 109 square kilometres, and almost completely flat, covered in coconut palms and fringed with white sand. The island is split into three towns: Santa Fe in the southeast, where the ferry arrives and most resorts and beaches are; Bantayan town in the middle, home to the old coral-stone church; and Madridejos in the north.

Most visitors come for the water. The sea around Bantayan is shallow, clear and dotted with sandbars and small islands, the best known being Virgin Island, a short bangka ride from Santa Fe. Days are spent island hopping, snorkeling over coral gardens and swimming off quiet beaches; evenings are for sunsets, ideally from a traditional paraw sailboat.

There's more on land than people expect: a freshwater pool inside a limestone cave, a community-run mangrove forest with bamboo walkways, and one of the oldest churches in Cebu. Base yourself in Santa Fe, get around by tricycle or rented motorbike, and keep a spare day in case the weather moves a boat trip.
