How to Get to Bantayan Island from Cebu City

By Leon Island Tours 4 min read

Bantayan Island sits off the northern tip of Cebu, and getting there is simpler than it looks on a map. From Cebu City you take a bus north to Hagnaya Port, then a short ferry across to Santa Fe. There are no flights to worry about and no tricky connections, just a long, scenic ride and a boat at the end of it.

This guide covers the standard route, how long each leg takes, roughly what it costs, and how to make the day easier if you're travelling with luggage, kids or a group.

The route at a glance

Almost everyone reaches Bantayan the same way:

  1. Get to Cebu North Bus Terminal (from the city or from Mactan-Cebu International Airport).
  2. Take a bus north to Hagnaya Port in San Remigio.
  3. Take the ferry from Hagnaya to Santa Fe, Bantayan Island.
Fares change often. Treat these as a guide and check at the ticket counter.

Cebu North Bus Terminal → Hagnaya Port (bus)4–5 hours₱250–₱400
Hagnaya Port → Santa Fe (ferry)1–1.5 hours₱200–₱360, plus a small terminal fee

Door to door, plan on six to seven hours from Cebu City, a little more from the airport.

Step 1: Getting to Cebu North Bus Terminal

Buses to Hagnaya leave from the North Bus Terminal, not the South Bus Terminal, which serves the southern half of Cebu. If you're staying in the city, a taxi or Grab gets you there easily.

Flying in? Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) is on Mactan Island, across the bridge from Cebu City. A taxi or Grab to the North Bus Terminal usually takes 45 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic. If you land in the late afternoon or evening, it's often easier to spend the night in Cebu and start fresh the next morning.

Step 2: The bus to Hagnaya Port

Ceres buses run north from the terminal to Hagnaya Port throughout the day, starting early in the morning. Look for buses signed Hagnaya, or ask at the counter. Both air-conditioned and non-aircon buses run the route; aircon costs a little more and is worth it in the midday heat.

The ride takes four to five hours, depending on traffic getting out of the city and how many stops the bus makes. Some counters sell combined bus and ferry tickets, which saves queuing again at the port.

Step 3: The ferry to Santa Fe

Ferries from Hagnaya to Santa Fe run several times a day, from early morning to late afternoon. The main operators are Island Shipping and Super Shuttle Ferry. The crossing takes one to one and a half hours on a large roll-on/roll-off ferry, so it's a steady ride even when there's a bit of wind.

Buy your ticket at the port, then pay the terminal fee before boarding. Keep some small bills and coins handy for both.

Arriving in Santa Fe

The ferry docks in Santa Fe, the town on Bantayan's southeast coast where most resorts and beaches are. Tricycles wait at the port and can take you to your hotel. Most of the Santa Fe beachfront is a short ride away.

Santa Fe is also where our tours start. The Sunset Paraw Sailing trip is an easy first evening if you arrive by mid-afternoon, and Virgin Island Hopping makes a good first full day.

The easier option: a private transfer

The bus and ferry are cheap and reliable, but it's a long day with luggage. If you're travelling as a family or group, a private van from the airport or your Cebu hotel straight to Hagnaya Port cuts out the bus terminal and the stops along the way.

We can arrange a private transfer end to end on request. Message us on WhatsApp with your arrival time and group size, and we'll sort out the van and the ferry so you only have to turn up.

Getting back to Cebu

The return trip is the same route in reverse: a ferry from Santa Fe to Hagnaya, then a bus south to Cebu North Bus Terminal. Ferries leave Santa Fe from early morning until late afternoon.

  • Allow the full six to seven hours back to Cebu City, and more to reach the airport.
  • If you have a flight, take a morning ferry and leave a generous buffer. A same-day evening flight is fine; an early-afternoon one is risky.
  • Weather can delay or cancel crossings, especially from June to November. See the best time to visit Bantayan for what to expect by season.

Quick tips

  • Carry cash. Bus and ferry tickets and terminal fees are usually paid in cash.
  • Pack light if you can. You'll carry your bags on and off the bus, through the port and onto the ferry.
  • Book ahead for Holy Week, Christmas and New Year. Buses, ferries and rooms fill up fast.
  • Bring water and snacks for the bus. There are stops along the way, but not on a schedule you control.

Once you're on the island, browse our tours or read the travel guide for what to pack and how bookings work.
