Sambawan Island

Where the sea meets the wild.

Maripipi, Biliran Province

About this destination

What makes it worth it

Sambawan Island is one of the Philippines' most striking island destinations: a cluster of grassy, rocky islets surrounded by clear turquoise water. It lies off the coast of Maripipi in Biliran Province and is known for its dramatic coastline, rich marine life and quiet, untouched feel.

The island is a designated marine sanctuary. Climb around 130 steps to its highest point for a 360° view over the sea, the neighbouring islands and the curves of the Sambawan coastline. Below the surface, coral reefs, tropical reef fish and, at times, sea turtles make it a rewarding place to snorkel close to shore or dive further out.

To see Sambawan beyond a day trip, stay the night: camp on the white-pebble shoreline, listen to the quiet, and wake up to the sea. It's also the first overnight stop on our Island Hopping Expedition, where guests sleep in bamboo beachfront bungalows and have kayaks and stand-up paddleboards to use.
